Zaurus SL-6000 Dismantled
The Tosa is quite easy to dismantle, provided high quality miniature screwdrivers are available, and due care is exercised.
Disclaimer: dismantling your Zaurus will almost certainly void the warranty and
possibly ruin it beyond repair. You do so at your own risk and ZaurusOrgUk take
no responsibility for such damage. I damaged a Zaurus doing this, albeit it
was bad luck, so would suggest only doing so if you are quite confident of
your abilities and/or have nothing to lose by doing so!
NewsFlashThe author broke his Zaurus during
reassembly. When putting the USB wifi daughter-board back on, he pressed
down on the connector, and accidentally squeezed the PCB putting pressure
on an SDRAM chip on the other side of the board. Since these devices are
BGA they are not supported across their whole area, and the device snapped
across its narrow dimension one quarter of the way along. The Zaurus
is now totally bricked.
If you have found this site and information even remotely
useful, a donation to the author towards the purchase of the
next Zaurus would be appreciated - even a small sum from many people will
add up! Contact zaurus (a) zaurus.org.uk. I promise I will be more careful
in future!
Ensure you have a working area which is well-lit and spacious and not easily
disturbed - do not have people walking round, tripping over or otherwise
attempting to interfere! Small children are a worst-case scenario for losing
or breaking these devices which are very vulnerable when opened!
Tools required:
- very fine screwdrivers - CK do some good ones
- a pie tin for storing different screw types, each cell numbered
- patience, calmness and courage!
As you progress with dismantling the Z, record the location of screws which
are removed, and which cell they are stored in, so that as the Z is reassembled
you will know exactly which screw to use.
Taking photographs with a digital camera is also useful so when you reassemble
you can remember what it looked like before!
Come back for the next exciting installment!
